Part 1 INTEGRATED LISTENING AND READING Time: 30 minutes (8 points) The Fussy family – Mr. and Mrs. Fussy, their daughter Candy and Mr. Fussy’s mother Grandma Fussy – have been traveling in Russia for a week. Tomorrow is their last day in Moscow and each of them has their own idea about what to do on their last afternoon in the Russian capital. Imagine that you are their tour guide and need to choose the right place to take them to. There are 3 places you are thinking about that might be just right. Task 1 Read the information about the 3 places that might be interesting for the Fussy family to visit on their last afternoon in Moscow and answer the questions that follow. Now you have 15 minutes to read the texts and answer the questions. The Arbat is one of the oldest and most famous streets in Moscow, especially among tourists. It is one kilometer long and is located in the centre of Moscow, with two metro stations – Smolenskaya and Arbatskaya – at its opposite ends which makes it easily accessible. Trams used to run along the Arbat, but now it is a pedestrian street full of souvenir shops that sell everything from matryoshka dolls to paintings. There are many restaurants there that range from cheap street-food places to elegant expensive restaurants. The famous Vakhtangov Drama Theatre is located in the very middle of the Arbat. The Pushkin Museum is another place in the Arbat that attracts many people. Manezhnaya Square is located in the heart of Moscow next to the Kremlin and Red Square and is within 7 minutes’ walk (500 m) from the Bolshoi and Maly theatres, the Theatre of Operetta, as well as Zoological and Geological museums. Underneath Manezhnaya Square there is an underground shopping mall “Okhotny Ryad” with shops that sell clothes and souvenirs, and restaurants. During its construction in 1993-1997, a lot of ancient artefacts dating back to pre-historic times were found. This is why the Archeological Museum of Moscow was built in Manezhnaya Square 7 m below the surface where among other things visitors can see a 17th century bridge across the Neglinka river. Tsaritsyno was founded in 1775 as the summer residence of Empress Catherine the Great. Today, it is one of the most popular leisure places for 1

Muscovites and tourists. The place is located in the south of Moscow and consists of more than 20 buildings in Moscow Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles many of which house museum exhibitions. The territory of Tsaritsyno which includes a hilly park with several ponds is over 100 hectares in area. In addition to excursions, classical music concerts take place in Tsaritsyno. Message 2: From: Interlochen Arts Camp news@interloch.com To: amysmith.parents@gmail.com Date: June 21, 2003, 4:55 PM Subject: The return of the bear Dear Families, As I shared with you earlier today, this afternoon a bear was spotted on our main campus. Out of an abundance of caution, our campus was put on a brief lockdown. Our campus security staff monitored the bear’s movements, and the lockdown was released once the bear left the campgrounds. However, our security team has continued to monitor the bear which later returned to the campus and is now sitting in a tree on the far south side of our campus. The Department of Natural Resources has been on site and has taken action to encourage the bear to leave. After several hours of coaxing, this determined bear is still in the tree, and monitored closely by security personnel. Unfortunately, the bear’s current location is limiting access to some student cabins. For the moment, this area of campus is completely closed and off-limits to students. If the bear continues to linger in the area this evening, all students living in the vicinity will be escorted safely to their cabins by campus safety personnel and “locked in” for the night. Our campus safety team, in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources, continues to monitor the bear and has enacted protocols to ensure the safety of our campus. The older, the better! The beginning of Moscow, maybe, – if it is at all possible. However, I want it to be interesting for all the rest as well. Mrs. Fussy: This has been such an enjoyable trip! I can’t believe we’ve managed to see so much in just one week! The only thing that I would love to do tomorrow afternoon – if it is possible – is to go to the theatre. I love drama, but of course, there is a big problem with the language – none of us can understand Russian! So, I guess this leaves us few choices – like a musical or an opera or maybe a ballet. Do you think we could find something like that? Candy Fussy: Yeah, I agree, the trip was really cool! I loved everything! Especially the Metro and the ice-cream! I don’t really have any special ideas for tomorrow. But if we could find some nice T-shirts or sweatshirts with a print of something about Moscow, that would be great. I wouldn’t mind buying a couple of those – for myself and for my best friend Betty. Something to remember this trip by. Betty and I always bring each other T-shirts from the places we visit.
