INTEGRATED LISTENING AND READING Time: 30 minutes (23 points) Frank and Laura are a brother and sister from New York. Together with their father they are visiting Moscow. Among other sites, they are going to see some metro stations. Task 1 Read the texts about six metro stations in Moscow and answer the questions after them. 1. Mayakovskaya Station (Green Line). This Art Deco masterpiece was opened on 11 September 1938, eight years after the death of the famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Architect Alexey Dushkin designed the station, while artist Alexander Deyneka created 34 beautiful ceiling mosaics based on the theme “24-Hour Soviet Sky.” This station looks very modern and futuristic, and its full-size model won the Grand Prix at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. 2. Tsvetnoy Boulevard Station (Grey Line). Opened on 31 December 1988, this postmodernist station was designed by architects Vladimir Filippov and Rimidalv Pogrebnoi. The station was built near the famous circus at the request of its director Yury Nikulin, who wanted children to have a more convenient way to get to the circus. Inside, the colourful stained-glass panel created by artist Vladimir Kalensky depicts three well-known clowns, but they are not easy to spot – it is a kind of puzzle. 3. Ploshchad’ Revolutsii Station (Dark Blue Line). This station opened its doors on 13 March 1938 as a joint creation of architect Alexei Dushkin and sculptor Matvey Manizer. It is easy to recognize by its dark-red marble arches with 76 bronze life-size statues in the Socialist Realist style. The statues represent Soviet citizens such as farmers, athletes, soldiers and schoolchildren. Several figures have become good-luck charms; for example, touching the nose of the border guard’s dog is a famous ritual among students and tourists. 4. TsSKA Station (Turquoise Line). This modern station opened on 26 February 2018, created by a design group headed by architect Nikolai Shumakov. Elevated on high pedestals, there are four life-size bronze sculptures of famous Soviet and Russian athletes, created by artist Mikhail Pereyaslavets. These traditional

READING Time: 25 minutes (17 points) Read the text below and do the following tasks. The phrase “the Ides of March” sounds mysterious today, almost like the title of a forgotten legend. In ancient Rome, however, it was simply a date in the calendar – March 15th. The Romans did not number days as we do now. Instead, each month was organized around three key markers: the Kalends (the 1st day), the Nones (the 5th or 7th day), and the Ides. In March, May, July, and October, the Ides fell on the 15th day and the Nones on the 7th; in other months, they fell on the 13th and 5th days respectively. Romans identified all the other days by calculating backward from the Kalends, Nones or Ides. They counted both the starting and ending days. For example: April 17 July 4 October 10
“ante diem XV Kalendas Maias” 15 days before the Kalends of May “ante diem IV Nonas Julias” 4 days before the Nones of July “ante diem VI Idus Octobres” 6 days before the Ides of October
The word Ides comes from an old Roman term meaning “to divide.” For the Romans, it marked the middle of the month and was often associated with the full moon. The Roman year originally had only ten months and began in March, and so the Ides of March was the first full moon of the new year. But over time, one particular date became unforgettable: the Ides of March in 44 BC. On that day, Julius Caesar – one of the most powerful leaders in Roman history – was killed in the Senate. According to the ancient historians Suetonius and Plutarch, Caesar had been told by a fortune teller that something bad would happen to him on the Ides of March. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) later made this moment famous in his play Julius Caesar, popularizing the phrase “Beware the Ides of March!” and turning the date into a symbol of fate, betrayal, and looming danger. Shakespeare based much of his play on Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, which was translated into English by Thomas North in 1579. So, there is a reason why the phrase “the Ides of March” sounds mysterious. We are not just talking about a date. We are remembering a sad moment in ancient history, and, at the back of our minds, thinking of Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare and the ancient historians Suetonius and Plutarch. Задание 14. Can you think of a modern English word which sounds like / is connected with one of the ancient Roman words used for marking days of the month? Write one word in the box without any articles or punctuation marks. ____________________ 8

Integrated Listening and Reading (30 minutes) Maximum points – 23 Frank and Laura are a brother and sister from New York. Together with their father they are visiting Moscow. Task 1 Read the texts about six metro stations in Moscow and answer the questions after them. Task 2 Now listen to the dialogues between Laura, Frank and their father and answer the following seven questions. You will hear the dialogues twice. You now have 30 seconds to look through the questions. Now we are ready to start. Father: So, how did you like it? Laura: The singers and dancers were amazing! I’ve never seen anyone dance that well before! Frank: And I really liked the building! It’s so beautiful inside, especially the lamp! Laura: It wasn’t a lamp, silly! It’s called a chandelier! Frank: Ok! A chandelier! Father: I don’t know about you two, but I’m exhausted. The opera was four hours long! I’m ready to call it a day. I can’t stop yawning! Frank: I’m not tired at all! Laura: Me neither! Please, let’s do something else! Father: But it’s already 11 p.m.! Frank: In Moscow! Father: That’s where we are! Laura: In New York it’s only 4 p.m. And besides, it’s still so light outside! I would never believe it was 11 p.m. Frank: Yes! It’s really light! I’m wide awake! Father: That’s because you woke up at noon and ignored me when I tried to wake you earlier. Anyway, if we go to bed now, we’ll beat the jetlag and wake up early tomorrow. Laura: Oh, please, Daddy, let’s do something fun! Frank: Yeah! Let’s go somewhere else! Walk around or something.

Father: Actually, I’ve got an idea. We could look at some metro stations. Frank: Metro? That’s what we call the subway in New York, right? Father: Exactly. Laura: Why would anyone want to look at subway stations? They are dirty and crowded. Father: You’ll see. It’s late enough that they won’t be crowded now. Frank: But you always tell us not to take the subway late at night! You say it’s dangerous! Father: Trust me. Anyway, you have two choices: go back to the hotel or look at some metro stations first. Laura: Fine, let’s see your metro stations! Frank: That’s definitely better than going to bed! *** Frank: Wow! Look at all these la… no, wait… chande… what? Laura: Chandeliers! Frank: Right! One, two, three… Laura: Nine! There are nine of them! And I love these pictures on the ceiling! They must be scenes from some old fairy tales or legends! Look at the horses and … Frank: And the knights! Father: Those are mosaics, they are not painted pictures! Laura: Oh, right! *** Frank: No chandeliers here, but the lamps look as if they were chandeliers! Laura: Yes! That’s so cool! Frank: Come here! There are pictures inside them, on the ceiling! Laura: Inside these light fixtures? Let me see! Oh, wow! Father: More mosaics! Laura: But very different! Here’s a plane! Frank: And here are some parachutes! Laura: More planes – they look really old! Such tiny planes! Frank: And here’s a zeppelin over the Kremlin! Laura: Kids playing with toy planes! Frank: A factory chimney with thick black smoke! Laura: More factory chimneys! Frank: That’s weird! Aren’t they supposed to be bad for the environment? Father: Back in the 1930s, when this station was built it was all about industrialization, nobody really cared about the environment! Laura: That’s bizarre! Father: Times change! *** Frank: Oh, this is fun! Laura: This is the best station ever! 2

Frank: Who are all these people supposed to be? Father: No idea. Maybe they represent different professions? Laura: Oh, I love this chicken! Isn’t it cute? Frank: I think the dog is cute! I want to touch its nose! It’s so shiny! *** Frank: Look! This station is modern! Laura: I know! Look at these statues! How do they not fall down? Frank: They all look like they are jumping or something. Laura: Yeah, that’s the whole point. Frank: Want to try to jump like that? Laura: I’m kind of tired now. What shall we do next? Father: A couple more stations perhaps? Laura: I don’t know. I think I’m finally ready for bed. Father: How about you, Frank? Frank: I’ve seen enough for today. Father: Aha! Looks like the jet lag finally caught up with you two after all! And it’s not even midnight! You’ll hear the dialogues again in 30 seconds. (pause 30 seconds) Now listen to the dialogues again. (Dialogue repeated) Now you have two minutes to finish the task. (pause 2 minutes) This is the end of the integrated task. Now you can start working on your reading task.
